Design Management.

The role of management in design is as tough to know as understanding of ‘what is design’. But the importance of management is design is as crucial as any business. Because it is a long & comprehensive activity. Just being a good designer is not simple, calling ownself a good manager is also tough. Ask to your employee, how good he finds you. And when we talk about design management, ask to not only your employees also to clients and most important Users.

Before starting I would like ask- What is design? I am still searching for perfect words to define it.
It’s a tool to achieve something. It’s about –
Integrating. To synthesize System. Communication. Finding Problem. To look from different perspective. Simplifying Things. And having a questioning attitude.

Then there are types of Design : i) Create design ii) Bring design (re-design) iii) Identify design. So in short design is about creating, bringing and identifying order.

And what Design basically do: –
Emotionalize – Synthesize – Sensualize – Intimitize – Intuitize – Humanize.

Design is useful in terms of creating Value. But again generating value perception is more important. It’s about holding attention. Your product should have delight ness to captivate your attention.

So according to it DESIGN in Business it is about:
– Elicit Action – Gain Attention – Hold Attention – Differentiates – Coordinates – Transforms -Value

And when thinks from all the aspects Production, Management, Finance, HR, and to get ORDER, we need Management.

As such Designers have an important role in organizations. They are the bridge between the firm’s existing practices and beliefs, what it does and thinks now and what it could be in the future. They are visionaries with important roles to play in the innovation process, and therefore are key drivers of organizational success. As such Designers have an important role in organizations. They are the between the firm’s existing practices and beliefs, what it does and thinks now and what it could be in the future. They are visionaries with important roles to play in the innovation process, and therefore are key drivers of organizational success. And for all this Design management is very necessary.
But what is Design management. Design management is achieving the organizational goals most effectively, efficiently through planning, organizing, controlling or monitoring, learning and motivating by keeping in mind design as a organizational resource.

Understanding on this subject is not about reading on this subject, its more of again Design + Management. Through the roots of Design management is not very old, this word was coined back in 1920 by AEG (General Electrical company) but was always in toll between design & management. But after 1980 it got pace.

Just like design, Design management is multifarious. Just like marketing. That’s why both have lots of common intersections. And here comes the Design leaderships which guides with a vision about where to go and Design management takes the re-active approach in suggesting how to go. How to achieve goals by exploring design-in terms of products, communicating and inside & outside environments. That’s why Design management is needed at different levels like at : Operational, Functional & Strategic.
Definitely there would be more sub levels of it.

That’s what a design manager does; involving with strategies, action plans and processes. Dealing with critical functions such as development of a new product, how to package and predicting the retail impact by doing competitive analysis and design Measurement. Infact like Designers they would be involve at some stage of design research, scenario Building and trend forecasting.

Just like running any business or becoming an entrepreneur; design manager qualities are – design skills, business skills, passion, time management, vision, strategic thinking and interpersonal skills. I must say these qualities are even mandatory to have in a designer also.

After all design is the big asset in this world. An now when lots & lots of firms have recognized the importance of design and design driven innovation for their competitive advantage, design management is at boom.

BTW here you can read a good article on Design led business.

All about Top!

Now a day I am seeing lots of articles on history of football and the interesting post on clothes peg.

So I also thought of writing on something specific like – spinning top- it was extremely popular at certain phase now it lost its charm and replaced by other similar kind of toys like BeybLades. But before writing anything I am just missing my friend, who used to be literally ‘mad’ about tops. Even she designed few tops in her academic years.
I watched an awesome film by Charles Ray on Tops.

Charles Ray TOP filmLight emitting TopsMagnetic topsKeychain top

It was awesome short film; starts with spinning the tops to all tops stopping.

The history of tops is so old that the exact period is unknown. Might be it was invented by rotating a sharp pointed stone or something like that. Or just took the inspiration from the earth and other objects in space that turn around their axis. That’s different it is one of the earliest toy that patented in USA. There were interesting stories about tops in 1800-1900 time. If people in India call it ‘lattu’ then in Chinese its called Da-bo-gai and Thai calls it by Too-loo name. Check this page of language.
Even different countries have own preferences over types of tops like the large plunger top in America. And in Europe whipping top was more popular. It spun by hitting it with a lash or whip. The peg top is spun by winding a string around the top and throwing the top to unwind the string and make the top spin.So are the
tops which gives special effects while spinning like -Light, sound, colors, drawing, round or elliptical motion, pieces come out, lifting and optical illusions.Beside spinning around tops has been used for gambling, prophecy and some gamers use it as a dice for generating random results.
The action of top is because of the gyroscopic effect for its operation.
Precession of Spinning Top

Typically the top will at first wobble until the shape of the tip and its interaction with the surface force it upright. After spinning upright for an extended period, the angular momentum, and therefore the gyroscopic effect, will gradually lessen, leading to ever increasing precession, finally causing the top to topple in a frequently violent last thrash.

Some more interesting facts there is top museum in Wisconsin, USA. And Mr. Chang Tai-Yuan is World Top Record Holder! Hall Graham spun a spinning top for 2 hours 52 minutes 11 seconds before its rim made contact with the ground, at Woodstock High School, Georgia, USA, on December 18, 1998.And if you already like top and good in spinning you would be happy to know about International Top spinners association. Browse this to know the tricks that you can do with your new spinning top! And yes, 11 October is world Top spinning day

Green Alphabets.

5th June- The world environment day.
So what are you doing today, planting or what great are you doing to make our world green?
World, which is loosing the greenness of it day by day as the consumption of hardware and robotic life is expanding, World where global warming is increasing and source of water is evaporating. What are you guys doing, why not learn something; like Alphabets!

A – Awareness – Making people aware, they are literate still they don’t know.
B – Beware – Warn them, what they are loosing, what will not see at all in near future.

C – Confess – What bad & good you did to your mother Earth.
D – Degradable – What ever you create/generate is it degradable.
E- Eco friendly – Go eco friendly- Take a jute bag, Wear khadi.
F- Friends– Talk to trees, Yes, you never know your next design‘s form and functionality is inspired from a plant.

G – Green design – Think green, to generate green designs ideas.
H – Honor it – Environment gives you so much like O2, one should be grateful.
I – Imagine – If I am a tree, what would ‘I’ expect from the world full of humans like us.
J – Join – Communities/ groups/ Network to spread the message and to learn from others.

K – Keep cleanness – don’t spit, don’t throw garbage on roads.
L – Love it – Love the smell of nature that you can’t enjoy by sitting in an A.C. room.

How to do Quick assignment.

If you are a designer (any kind of graphic, industrial), chances are often people will come to you to ask how will this look or taking suggestions. So how do you, while you are working on a busy project? Even in a company other departments’ guys could approach to design a logo or Design a T-shirt for upcoming event. And at times these assignments are on urgent basis. Like not much time, 1-2 days.
I remember my 1st week of Industrial design, Design overview course, it was like you will get an assignment in the morning and by the end of day you finish it with mock-ups.
What are the steps to do a Quickie assignment (design)?

Once you get a project brief, how do you generate concepts :
Phase I : Understand the client/ user – Designing is about People. So even before starting coming up with a vague idea think who are the users, how to work on idea by keeping in mind the constraints given by client.
Phase II : Brainstorming : Starts with recollecting all your previous generated ideas and products seen till date in reference to the given project. This will increase the list and you will get good information. Just jot down points/ features/ products/ ideas/ material etc. on a sheet of paper.

Phase III : Representation – Make a sketch, doodle out, so that you get a 3-D picture of the idea. You will get an idea of material specification, functionality, mechanism even before making something concrete. It is good to do in the sense of getting the complexity that could arise at later stage.

Phase IV : Presentation – If you have to show it to others or even not its always good to do. As it gives clarity not only to you but also to the concerned person. Conveying your idea that is easy to understand should be there. You are a designer, can imagine in 3-D doesn’t mean others too.

Phase V : Detailing – once an idea is freeze you can proceed to the detailing of it. Detailed 3- D drawing of it and what are color possibilities, costing etc.

Phase VI : Mockups – If your idea is little bit complex make a small mockup or prototype so that anyone can understand. You can know people opinion on the same, how are their response, it is like doing in-house testing or asking to your friends what they think of this product. It will give you the common idea about product sustainability.

Phase Forever : Keep discussing – discuss your ideas with as many people as possible. It’s not that you go and start doing testing/research. But if you interact with someone while in pantry or in cab just ask what do think of this idea even if you are designing a logo ask to others. Even what is their response on any of similar existing product. For example if you are designing new corporate identity you could ask to people what do they think of new reliance mobile logo, what it’s conveying to you.

Might be I am missing some points but well these phase again depend on the individual’s approach and the demand of the project.
